Azamara Journey Plans November 2028 Refurbishment with New Dining and Spa Experiences

A 16–30 November dry dock will refresh restaurants, lounges, suites and public areas before a planned 12-night Greece and Egypt cruise from Athens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Azamara Journey is scheduled for a dry dock from 16 to 30 November 2028 under the Azamara Forward programme.
  • Plans include redesigned dining venues, an Atlas Bar offering, a transformed Cabaret Lounge, a refreshed Sanctum Spa and accommodation improvements.
  • The ship is scheduled to return to service on 30 November 2028 with a 12-night round-trip voyage from Athens through Greece and Egypt.
  • Azamara Quest is expected to introduce its improvements in 2026, with work on Azamara Onward planned for 2027.

Azamara Journey is scheduled for a two-week refurbishment in November 2028, bringing updated restaurants, lounges, accommodation and wellness facilities to the small cruise ship as Azamara Cruises continues its fleetwide Azamara Forward investment programme.

The vessel will enter dry dock from 16 to 30 November 2028, with passengers due to experience the improvements on a 12-night itinerary departing Athens on the day work is scheduled to finish. The round-trip voyage will visit destinations in Greece and Egypt, combining the upgraded onboard environment with the extended time ashore that is central to Azamara’s cruise offering.

What will change aboard Azamara Journey?

Plans announced on 21 October 2026 cover a redesigned Discoveries Restaurant, a dedicated Chef’s Table dining experience and a new Atlas Bar offering. The ship’s Cabaret Lounge will be transformed, while the Sanctum Spa is scheduled for a complete refresh. Staterooms, suites and shared passenger spaces will also receive updates.

Together, the changes address the places passengers spend time between ports: dining rooms, social venues, entertainment spaces and private accommodation. The renovation is not intended to alter Azamara Journey’s fundamental small-ship positioning, according to the cruise line. One notable distinction from the wider programme is that the new Penthouse Deck planned for Azamara Quest will not be installed aboard Azamara Journey.

Dondra Ritzenthaler, chief executive of Azamara Cruises, said the programme is designed to modernise the onboard experience without losing the familiar atmosphere that returning guests value. In its announcement, the company placed particular emphasis on spaces for dining, entertainment and socialising between destination visits.

A phased renewal across the fleet

Azamara Journey’s 2028 dry dock forms part of a refurbishment sequence rather than a standalone project. Azamara Quest is expected to introduce the first Azamara Forward enhancements after its November 2026 dry dock, with its inaugural post-renovation departure scheduled for 18 December 2026. Improvements aboard Azamara Onward are planned for 2027, followed by the work on Journey in 2028.

The phased approach gives the cruise line time to introduce redesigned facilities ship by ship while maintaining its focus on destination-rich itineraries and personalised onboard service. Azamara operates four vessels—Journey, Quest, Onward and Azamara Pursuit—whose smaller scale allows access to ports that are not always practical for larger cruise ships.

Athens departure will introduce the refreshed ship

The first voyage following Journey’s scheduled refurbishment is set to depart Athens, Greece, on 30 November 2028, sailing for 12 nights through Greece and Egypt before returning to Athens. Guests booked on that sailing would be among the first to experience the ship’s updated public spaces and accommodation, although the company has not yet published the full booking details.

Azamara said more information about the itinerary and availability will follow as its upcoming deployment opens for sale. Travellers considering a reservation should therefore distinguish the announced sailing plan from a confirmed booking opportunity.

The cruise line’s broader Azamara Forward programme reflects its emphasis on enhancing time spent aboard without shifting away from port-intensive travel. Its usual destination-immersion model includes longer stays in port, including extended destination days of 10 hours or more and overnight calls on selected sailings. Details of the ship itself are available on the official Azamara Journey page.
