IHG and American Express Bring Hotel Elite Status and Cashback Benefits to Mainland China Cardholders

Eligible Platinum Cardmembers can match to IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite, while selected hotel stays qualify for a limited-time RMB 370 cashback offer.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Eligible American Express Platinum Cardmembers in mainland China can register for complimentary IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite status valid through 31 December 2027.
- Completing 10 qualifying nights in the specified promotional period can extend matched status through 31 December 2028.
- Registered eligible cardholders may receive RMB 370 cashback on spending of at least RMB 1,800 at participating IHG hotels through 31 December 2026.
- The offers have distinct eligibility requirements and terms; participating hotels and availability restrictions apply.
For eligible premium cardholders in mainland China, a credit card could now provide a direct route to higher-tier hotel recognition. IHG Hotels & Resorts and American Express have introduced a partnership that allows qualifying Platinum Cardmembers to register for complimentary IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite status, alongside a separate, time-limited hotel cashback offer.
The agreement, announced in Shanghai on 22 October 2026, links the card network’s local premium membership offering with IHG’s international hotel portfolio. IHG describes it as the first IHG One Rewards status-match collaboration with an international card network in mainland China. The participating American Express business is Amex (Shanghai) Bankcard Clearing and Settlement Company Limited, the company’s mainland China joint venture.
Platinum hotel recognition without the usual qualifying-stay threshold
Eligible American Express Platinum Cardmembers in mainland China can enrol for matched Platinum Elite status, valid until 31 December 2027. IHG says that status provides a 60% bonus on points earned from qualifying stays and a welcome amenity, with potential room upgrades and late checkout subject to availability. The benefits apply within the IHG One Rewards network, which covers more than 7,000 hotels globally, subject to programme and hotel rules.
There is also a route to keep the matched tier for a further year: cardholders who register for the promotion and complete 10 qualifying nights between 15 September 2026 and 31 December 2027, under the applicable conditions, can extend their Platinum Elite status until 31 December 2028. The qualification requirement and enrolment conditions matter; the longer validity is not an automatic benefit for every cardholder.
Cashback offer targets selected luxury stays
A second benefit focuses on hotel spending. Eligible mainland China American Express Cardmembers who successfully register and spend at least RMB 1,800 with their American Express Card at a participating IHG property by 31 December 2026 can receive RMB 370 cashback, according to the announcement. The offer covers participating properties from Regent Hotels & Resorts, Vignette Collection and Kimpton Hotels, along with selected InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in Greater China. The participating international hotel selection also includes destinations in Australia, Japan and Singapore.
The cashback and status-match programmes have different deadlines, eligibility rules and qualifying actions. Travellers should check participating properties, registration requirements, spending definitions and any exclusions before making a booking or relying on a benefit. IHG directs cardholders to the Amex China Mini Program for full terms.
Hotel loyalty and payment benefits move closer together
Rita Jiang, IHG’s Chief Commercial & Marketing Officer for Greater China, said the arrangement is intended to connect the partners’ membership ecosystems and bring recognition into the hotel stay. Yamin Zhu, Chief Executive Officer of Amex (Shanghai) Bankcard Clearing and Settlement Company Limited, characterised the hotel partnership as an addition to the company’s refreshed Platinum Card travel and lifestyle benefits.
For IHG, which says IHG One Rewards has more than 160 million members, the move offers a way to reach frequent and higher-spending travellers through a payments partner rather than only through hotel stays. For cardholders, the practical value will depend on whether their card is eligible, where they travel and which participating hotels honour each promotion’s terms.
