Discover Airlines to launch nonstop Edmonton–Frankfurt flights in June 2027

The seasonal three-times-weekly Airbus A330-300 service will give Alberta travellers an additional route into the Lufthansa Group network and offer European visitors a direct gateway to the province.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Discover Airlines plans nonstop Edmonton–Frankfurt flights from June 1 to October 30, 2027.
  • Airbus A330-300 flights are scheduled three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
  • The route offers connections through the Lufthansa Group network and Aeroplan and Miles & More options.
  • Tourism and business leaders expect the link to improve access to Edmonton and the wider Alberta region.

A new transatlantic connection is set to link Alberta with Germany next summer, as Discover Airlines prepares to start nonstop flights between Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and Frankfurt Airport (FRA) on June 1, 2027. The seasonal service, scheduled through October 30, will operate three times a week, opening another long-haul option for travellers in Western Canada and providing a new route into Alberta for European visitors.

According to Edmonton International Airport, the Lufthansa Group leisure carrier will use an Airbus A330-300 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Flights from Frankfurt are scheduled to depart at 13:05 and land in Edmonton at 14:30, while departures from Edmonton will leave at 16:15 and reach Frankfurt at 09:05 the following day. All times are local. The service is announced for the 2027 summer season rather than as a year-round operation.

A new gateway to Europe and Alberta

Frankfurt’s role as a major international hub gives Edmonton passengers onward connection possibilities within the Lufthansa Group network, including destinations in Europe, Africa and Asia. Discover Airlines says its long-haul offering includes premium economy and lie-flat business class seating. Travellers on the new service will also be able to earn and redeem Aeroplan points and book through Air Canada channels, alongside access to the Miles & More loyalty programme, according to the airport’s announcement.

Rupert Kraus, Discover Airlines’ Director Network and Partnerships, described Edmonton as a gateway to the Rocky Mountains and said the route would give visitors from Europe easier access to Western Canada, while expanding travel choices for people in the Edmonton region through Frankfurt.

For inbound tourism, the addition has significance beyond city-to-city travel. Edmonton provides access to Alberta’s urban attractions, events and wider visitor economy, including journeys towards Jasper and the Canadian Rockies. Local tourism organisations see Germany as an important overseas visitor market and expect the route to support travel across the region, although the eventual effect will depend on passenger demand and the service’s performance.

Airport and regional partners emphasise economic links

Myron Keehn, President and CEO of Edmonton International Airport, said the new Lufthansa Group link would broaden the city’s international network in both directions. Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack pointed to opportunities for tourism and business, while Jon Mamela, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Travel Alberta, highlighted interest from German visitors in Edmonton and Jasper.

Traci Bednard, CEO of Explore Edmonton, cited CAD 2.6 billion in annual visitor spending in Edmonton. Daryn Edgar, CEO of Edmonton Global, stressed the trade and investment value of a direct connection to Frankfurt. Tyler Riopel, CEO of Tourism Jasper, also welcomed the potential for tourism businesses and communities outside the city.

Edmonton International Airport describes itself as Canada’s fifth-busiest airport by passenger traffic and says its activities support more than 22,500 jobs. The airport’s release positions this new flight as part of efforts to improve the region’s access to overseas markets, rather than promising any specific passenger or economic outcome from the route.

Flight schedule and booking

The announced operating window is June 1–October 30, 2027, with Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday flights. Frankfurt–Edmonton is scheduled for 13:05–14:30 local time and Edmonton–Frankfurt for 16:15–09:05 the next day. Travellers should confirm schedules, connections and availability before booking, as airline timetables may change.

Flights are to be offered through Discover Airlines, Lufthansa Group booking channels and travel agencies. The carrier, based in Frankfurt, also operates from Munich and is focused on leisure destinations.
