Amadeus Brings Weather Guarantees and Travel Insurance into Hotel Bookings

New iHotelier integrations with Sensible Weather and battleface give participating hotels protection add-ons and additional ancillary revenue options

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Amadeus is embedding travel insurance and automated Weather Guarantees in the iHotelier booking process.
  • Sensible Weather compensates qualifying guests when covered weather conditions occur; battleface offers insurance and 24/7 emergency assistance.
  • Amadeus reports 11% higher average booking conversion and 2% fewer cancellations among hotels offering the integrated Weather Guarantee.
  • battleface coverage is available to eligible travellers from the US, UK, EU, Canada and Mexico, subject to product terms.

Amadeus is adding travel insurance and automated weather-related compensation options to its iHotelier Central Reservations System, giving participating hotels a way to offer additional protection while guests complete their reservations. The expansion brings an established Amadeus travel-protection offering, previously used by travel sellers and airlines, into the hotel-booking process.

The hospitality technology company is working with two providers whose products address different travel risks: Sensible Weather, which offers a Weather Guarantee triggered by qualifying conditions, and battleface, which offers travel insurance for events such as cancellations, delays, medical emergencies and lost baggage. The services are designed to be embedded in the booking flow rather than administered as separate hotel-run programs.

Weather compensation without a conventional claims process

Sensible Weather’s parametric model uses predefined weather conditions to determine whether a qualifying guest should receive compensation. Amadeus says the arrangement can provide automatic compensation without guests having to submit a traditional claim, even when they continue with the trip. Depending on the applicable terms and conditions, the payment can reach up to the full value of the stay.

Hotels selling the guarantee receive a share of the revenue. Amadeus reports that hotels offering the integrated product have seen an average 11% increase in booking conversion and a 2% reduction in cancellations. These figures are presented as outcomes reported for participating hotels, not as a forecast or assurance that every property will achieve comparable results.

Nick Cavanaugh, founder and chief executive of Sensible Weather, said the proposition is intended to reduce uncertainty around weather-sensitive trips and help travellers book with greater confidence. For hotels in beach, outdoor-activity or seasonal destinations, the option introduces a different form of reassurance than a conventional cancellation policy, although eligibility depends on the guarantee purchased.

Insurance for eligible travellers in five markets

Through battleface, eligible guests can purchase insurance covering specified unexpected disruptions, including trip cancellation, travel delays, emergency medical needs and baggage loss. The offering also includes round-the-clock emergency assistance to help travellers arrange medical care and navigate problems away from home.

According to Amadeus, the insurance options are available to eligible travellers from the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada and Mexico. Precise cover, exclusions and eligibility will depend on the product selected and the provider’s terms; the announcement does not suggest that every booking or market qualifies for every option.

Sasha Gainullin, chief executive of battleface, said the integration seeks to make travel insurance easier to find and purchase as part of a hotel reservation. The arrangement could also allow hotels to offer protection without taking responsibility for managing policies and claims themselves, which remain with the provider.

A new point of sale for hotel ancillaries

Peter Altmann, Amadeus vice president for Mobility and Travel Protection, positioned the move as an extension of its existing protection services into hospitality, where hotels are seeking ways to support direct bookings and create additional revenue without adding administrative work.

For travellers, the distinction between the two products is significant. Weather Guarantees generally respond to specified weather triggers under their terms, whereas insurance is designed around covered incidents and policy exclusions. Guests considering either option should review the product documentation to understand what event triggers a payment, the limits that apply and whether other protection already covers the same risk.

The integration extends the range of services offered through the iHotelier Suite, which supports hotel reservations and guest-management operations. Details of the launch were published in Amadeus’ October 20 announcement. The company describes the two protection options as available through the platform, without specifying a universal rollout schedule for all hotel customers.
