- Uganda: Members of Parliament (MPs) call for children’s inclusion in regional climate decisionsParliament has hosted the first East African Community’s Children Summit for Climate Change, with legislators calling for children’s inclusion in issues pertaining climate change. The Chairperson of the Uganda Parliamentary Forum for Children (UPFC), Hon. Susan Abeja, said the summit aimed at urging East African governments to meaningfully involve children in developing policies and interventions to address climate change. Abeja who is also the Otuke District Woman MP, said children are among those most affected by climate change, despite contributing the least to the crisis. “Our position as the Forum is clear, children must not only be protected from the effects of climate change, they must be meaningfully involved in shaping the solutions,” she said adding that “Children are experiencing the consequences of environmental degradation, floods, droughts and other climate-related emergencies, despite having contributed the least to the causes of this crisis.” Abeja was speaking at the inaugural summit held under the theme: “Children Leading East African Integration: Climate, Peace and Prosperity” held at Parliament on Friday, 16 October 2026. The event was also attended by MPs under the Forum, MPs from the East Africa Legislative Assembly, the Deputy Secretary General for East African Community, Hon. Andrea Ariik Malueth and development partners. Nakasongola County MP, Hon. Ivan Kyeyune commended the organisers for involving children in climate-change discussions, saying the initiative should challenge adults who have prioritised businesses at the expense of environmental crises. “It is us the elders who have prioritized commercialised farming at the expense of wetlands. It is the elders that prefer having factories in wetlands, favoring job creation over environmental protection, yet our children suffer these effects including lack of water and food such that I have seen those who go to school without food,” Kyeyune said. Kyeyune urged children to begin with practical actions within their communities, including each planting at least five trees. The Chief of WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), Environment and Climate Change at UNICEF Uganda, Lalit Patra urged MPs to make commitments on climate change for implementation within their constituencies. Patra also asked MPs to establish climate change-youth groups in their constituencies to sustain their initiatives beyond the summit. Representing the Ministry of Water and Environment, Dr. Flavia Byekwaso said the government must move to investing in climate-resilient schools and other public facilities while ensuring access to clean water and renewable energy. She said children must be consulted during the formulation of climate-change policies, because they experience the effects of environmental degradation and will live longest with the consequences of decisions taken today. The summit concludes with a Climate Champions Weekend on Saturday, 17 October 2026 where participants will plant 5,000 trees at Forest High School in Kasanda District. - Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) to Launch Mineral Exploration Fund to Boost Africa’s Reserve SovereigntyMultilateral pan-African financial institution Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has announced plans to launch a dedicated exploration development investment company within the next 12 months, aiming to close the continent’s widening mineral exploration funding gap. Speaking at African Mining Week in Cape Town on Wednesday, Franklin Edochie, Deputy Director and Head of the Metals and Mining Desk at AFC, explained that the new investment vehicle is designed to expand Africa’s mineral reserves, boost domestic production and secure mineral sovereignty. “If we don’t invest in African exploration, we risk losing control over where our resources end up,” he emphasized. “Investing in exploration is one of our primary targets because local value-addition strategies depend on discovering and defining new reserves.” He underscored that continent-led exploration funding is vital to insulating Africa from global geopolitical pressures, which often dictate which projects receive capital rather than prioritizing the minerals most critical to the region's long-term economic development. In tandem with upstream discovery, the AFC is scaling its infrastructure commitments across key trade corridors. “We want to expand our investments in regional ports and power corridors to ensure major industrial areas, such as the Copperbelt, are fully powered,” he added. Reinforcing the push for upstream discovery, Freddy Mwamba Kanyinku, Director General of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC) Centre d’Expertise, d’Evaluation et de Certification (CEEC), highlighted the DRC's ongoing national geological mapping program as a major entry point for global investors. Kanyinku noted that while the DRC has completed high-precision geomapping for only 19% of its territory so far, modernizing geological evaluation mechanisms has already transformed how foreign investors access the country. "Previously, to invest in the DRC, you had to go through Belgium first. That is no longer the case - investors can now come directly to us," Kanyinku stated, pointing out that advanced survey equipment being procured by CEEC is giving stakeholders a clearer view of the country's resource value. "Eighty percent of our land remains unexplored. While we have secured partnerships with countries like the US, there is still immense opportunity for international investors across these uncharted mineral regions," reiterated Kanyinku. - Afreximbank’s Zimbabwe Country Brief explores the country’s Critical Mineral advantage and reform-driven economic outlookAfrican Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) (www.Afreximbank.com) has released its Zimbabwe Country Brief, providing a comprehensive analysis of the southern African nation's macroeconomic outlook, trade performance, financial sector development and debt sustainability profile. The brief explores Zimbabwe’s economic growth potential support by its deep regional ties and diverse natural resource endowment that is increasingly central to the global energy transition. Among the brief’s key highlights is Zimbabwe’s strong growth momentum. Real GDP growth is estimated to have strengthened to 8.3% in 2025, driven by a rebound in agricultural production, robust gold exports and elevated global gold prices. Growth is forecast to remain solid at 5% in 2026, supported by stronger agricultural yields, elevated government spending and a favourable outlook for gold mining. Most strikingly, inflation is forecast to ease dramatically to 3.9% in 2026, down from an estimated 55% in 2025, as the Zimbabwe Gold currency stabilises on the back of stronger domestic gold output and improved foreign-currency inflows. Zimbabwe holds the largest lithium reserves on the continent and boasts some of the highest-grade spodumene deposits globally, positioning the country as a critical supplier of battery minerals at a time of surging global demand for electric vehicle and energy storage technologies. Gold, platinum group metals, diamonds and chrome complete a resource profile that few economies on the continent can rival. Furthermore, this edition reveals how Zimbabwe’s trajectory is particularly compelling, given the government’s deliberate shift from raw commodity exporter to industrial processor. The brief highlights February 2026 restrictions on exports of raw minerals and lithium concentrate as a decisive step in the value-addition agenda, with the potential to reposition Zimbabwe within global battery supply chains. The National Development Strategy 2 framework for 2026-2030 reinforces this direction, prioritising macroeconomic stability, infrastructure, industrialisation and job creation. The brief also points to further longer-term upside from the May 2026 petroleum production-sharing agreement covering the Cabora Bassa Basin oil and gas project. The brief further highlights a growing and evolving financial sector, with InnBucks MicroBank's May 2025 partnership with Mambu marking a significant step in the development of digital banking and broader financial inclusion. With a solid GDP growth outlook for 2026, a dramatically improved inflationary environment and one of Africa's most strategically valuable mineral endowments being actively developed for higher-value production, Zimbabwe presents a timely and powerful story of economic transformation. Commenting on the release of the brief, Yemi Kale, Group Chief Economist and Managing Director, Research and Trade Intelligence at Afreximbank, said: “Zimbabwe’s rich endowment of critical minerals offers a powerful opportunity to move beyond the export of raw commodities and build competitive regional value chains anchored in local production, beneficiation and value addition. By converting its lithium, gold, platinum-group metals and other resources into higher-value products, Zimbabwe can deepen its industrial base, create quality jobs and expand trade with markets across Africa. This is fully aligned with Afreximbank’s mandate to transform the structure of African trade and accelerate the continent’s industrialisation under the AfCFTA.” Read more in the Afreximbank Country Brief on Zimbabwe here (https://apo-opa.co/47kgH1p) Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Afreximbank.
