We are working with Voltus to build a 1-gigawatt virtual power plant.

Today, Google and Voltus announced an expanded agreement to build a 1-gigawatt (GW) virtual power plant across the PJM grid region, which serves 67 million people across 13 states and Washington, D.C.
Voltus aggregates flexible capacity from local businesses and homes — like smart thermostats, batteries, and industrial assets — into a Google-funded virtual power plant. During peak demand, these assets temporarily reduce energy use to support grid reliability. In return, participating customers receive direct economic benefits, including bill savings and cash payments.
Building on a 100-megawatt agreement from earlier this year, this 10-fold expansion represents one of the largest known distributed capacity portfolios deployed by a hyperscaler to date.
This initiative reflects Google’s commitment to actively bring new capacity to local grids while strengthening regional reliability and affordability.
