United Brings Fresh Meal Preordering to 420 More Daily Flights Across North America and the Caribbean
Economy passengers on flights over 900 miles can now select meals up to 24 hours before departure, extending the service to as many as 65,000 additional travellers each day.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- United has lowered the minimum flight distance for fresh-meal preordering from over 1,190 miles to over 900 miles.
- The expansion covers 420 additional flights daily and up to 65,000 more customers per day.
- Orders are available from five days to 24 hours before departure through United's website or mobile app.
- The airline is also investing in Starlink Wi-Fi, seatback entertainment and refreshed inflight snacks.
A shorter flight no longer necessarily means fewer opportunities to plan an onboard meal. United Airlines has expanded advance ordering for fresh food in United Economy to more routes across North America and the Caribbean, making its Bistro on Board selections available to passengers on flights longer than 900 miles rather than the previous 1,190-mile threshold.
Effective October 19, 2026, the change adds approximately 420 flights a day to the programme and gives up to 65,000 more customers daily access to meal preordering, according to the airline. Among the routes newly covered are services connecting Chicago with Houston, Denver with San Francisco, and Houston with Washington, D.C. The practical benefit is the ability to choose a preferred item before travelling rather than decide solely from what is available during the flight.
Passengers can place orders through United’s website or mobile app starting five days before departure, with the window closing 24 hours ahead of the flight. Customers using the website can find available items in the Trips area; app users are notified when preordering becomes available. United cautions that preordered meals might not be available in certain circumstances.
The fresh-food menu rotates monthly, spanning sandwiches, burgers, pasta and breakfast dishes. Current examples include a pork mojo burrito, Chicago patty melt developed with Jeff Mauro of Mauro Provisions, a hot honey chicken-and-waffle sandwich and a cinnamon apple waffle. The preorder system also offers eligible snacks and the carrier’s signature snackboxes. The service provides additional choice but does not mean that meals are complimentary.
David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer, framed the expansion as part of a wider effort to give travellers more control over their journey, alongside connectivity and inflight entertainment improvements. For passengers, the meaningful change is that advance meal planning is no longer confined to the airline’s longer domestic and regional flights.
The initiative follows the airline’s earlier introduction of fresh-meal preordering in Economy on flights exceeding 1,190 miles. Its broader cabin investment programme includes complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members on equipped aircraft, more seatback entertainment and increased overhead storage. United says Starlink is available across its two-cabin regional fleet and more than 280 mainline aircraft, with fleetwide installations expected to finish in 2027.
United has also expanded its live television selection, adding TBS for postseason baseball through a partnership with DISH. It says live channels are accessible on more than 200 aircraft, representing around 900 flights daily, and that its entertainment catalogue exceeds 2,500 hours of programming. The airline expects to have installed seatback screens on as many as 1,000 aircraft before the end of 2027, while new aircraft are being introduced with 27-inch 4K OLED displays.
A separate refresh of the Tapas, Takeoff and Recline snackboxes is scheduled for November 1. United is also offering a limited-edition Wishes snackbox connected with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. These changes are part of its effort to differentiate the onboard experience through food and entertainment rather than solely through flight schedules or fare options.
Travellers should check the options for their particular itinerary through the United app or website: eligibility depends on flight distance and individual flight availability. The airline published the new eligibility rules in its October 19 announcement.
