UK Government Approves Gas Production at Jackdaw Field in North Sea

The government of the United Kingdom (UK) has granted consent for gas to be produced from the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea.

The site, off the coast of Aberdeen, is one of two North Sea projects – alongside the Rosebank oil field – that have hung over Labour after the previous Tory Government was halted due to a legal challenge.

UK Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh, who gave approval for the NSTA to grant consent for drilling, says the move will “support the country’s energy security with homegrown gas this winter”.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he will “take a pragmatic approach when it comes to the North Sea” since coming to power in the summer.

According to the Prime Minister, the decision will “protect hundreds of jobs and help keep millions of homes warm”, but stressed it would not hinder the Government’s targets on renewable energy.

He says “At a time when people are really struggling, it’s right that we look in a responsible way at maximising the existing energy reserves we have in Britain that could help.

“We’re committed to moving towards renewable energy and reaching net zero by 2050.
