KEY TAKEAWAYS
- SONO Hotels & Resorts Asia has signed a hotel management agreement with PT Drupadi Management for an existing 225-room property in Seminyak.
- The property will introduce the SONO Moon brand to Bali, with an opening targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
- Planned amenities include two swimming pools, a gym, spa, kids’ club, meeting facilities and all-day dining.
- The repositioning adds to SONO’s announced hotel expansion plans elsewhere in Bali and across Asia.
An existing 225-room hotel in Bali’s Seminyak district is set for a new identity under the SONO Moon brand, with a relaunch targeted for the first quarter of 2027. The plan adds a new internationally managed lifestyle hotel option to the neighbourhood through the repositioning of an established property, rather than a newly built development.
SONO Hotels & Resorts Asia has signed a hotel management agreement with PT Drupadi Management for the property, which will operate as SONO Moon Bali Seminyak. The deal introduces the brand to Bali as the South Korean-owned hotel group continues to expand in Indonesia, according to its 20 October announcement.
The focus is on updating an existing hotel and its market position. Selected areas are to be redesigned or enhanced with new lifestyle and commercial offerings, although the partners have not disclosed a refurbishment budget, a detailed construction programme or a firm opening date. The first-quarter 2027 timetable remains a target.
What guests can expect in Seminyak
The central Seminyak location places the property near the area’s beaches, restaurants, cafés and shopping. Planned facilities include two swimming pools, a gym, spa, kids’ club, meeting spaces and an all-day dining venue. Together, those amenities would allow the hotel to serve leisure travellers and families while also accommodating smaller business gatherings.
Beyond the facilities, the partners want the new identity to make the hotel more connected with the food, culture and creative life of its surroundings. The extent of changes to individual rooms, public areas and dining concepts has not yet been specified.
Jihong An, senior vice president of SONO Hotels & Resorts Asia, described Indonesia as an important market for the operator and said the agreement reflects a preference for suitable partners and properties over expansion based solely on hotel numbers. Herry Budiman, president director of PT Drupadi Management, said the repositioning would build on the property’s location and existing facilities while seeking to improve its market position.
Part of a wider Bali development programme
The Seminyak agreement sits alongside other announced projects in SONO’s Indonesian pipeline. In an earlier regional expansion update, the company outlined a 90-room SONO Felice lifestyle property in Canggu targeted for 2028 and a 61-villa Celesta Nusa Penida by SONO Calm resort planned for 2027. Those remain separate projects with their own development schedules.
SONO Hotels & Resorts Asia says it currently manages 17 hotels in Thailand, Indonesia and Japan, with more than 13 additional properties in its Asian development pipeline by 2029. The operator is part of South Korea’s SONO hospitality group, which reports a wider international portfolio of more than 14,500 operating rooms.
Evan Burns, SONO Hotels & Resorts Asia’s area vice president for Indonesia, said the Seminyak repositioning is intended both to connect visitors with the neighbourhood and to strengthen the hotel’s product and commercial positioning. For travellers, the key test will be how visibly the updated rooms, shared spaces and guest experience differ when the property begins operating under its new name.
For the hotel group, the agreement offers a route into Seminyak with its SONO Moon brand using an existing asset. The proposed early-2027 opening will depend on completing the planned transition, and the partners have yet to announce an exact launch date.
