Philadelphia Zoo is reimagining its seasonal after-dark attraction around the holiday wishes of its animals, with a new interactive storyline, illuminated wildlife installations and hands-on family activities set to debut when LumiNature opens on 19 November 2026.

The annual light event, presented by PNC Bank, will transform the historic Philadelphia attraction into a 14-stop evening trail through 9 January 2027. This year’s concept centres on letters addressed to Santa Claws, a lion character who invites visitors to discover how the Zoo’s animals can benefit from enrichment and conservation support. Every guest will receive a Book of Wishes to follow clues, record discoveries and take home as a memento.

Interactive installations put wildlife at the centre of the experience

Instead of following a conventional series of festive lights, visitors will move through themed scenes combining animal stories with illuminated displays. The opening Flutter Flair attraction features a 22-foot Butterfly Tree decorated with 4,000 illuminated butterflies, while the North Pole Post Office introduces the animal letters, oversized parcels and guests’ Book of Wishes.

Further along the route, Slither & Shimmer centres on a giant snake lit by more than 5,000 bulbs, with illuminated insects nearby. The new Wishes from the Wild scene brings together glowing marine life, including jellyfish, coral and a sea turtle tree. Monkey Business features a 20-foot banana tree, and the new Bear Whispers display draws inspiration from the Zoo’s Andean and sloth bears.

Other highlights include a 40-foot penguin at Bird Lake Plaza, illuminated by approximately 40,000 lights, and a returning 25-foot flamingo tree assembled from around 1,500 pink lawn flamingos. Visitors can also explore the Enchanted Forest, the Starlit Savannah and the new Field of Wishes before reaching the final attraction.

Guests bringing a Zoo Key, or buying one onsite, can activate interactive features at five locations: Flutter Flair, Impala Fountain, Monkey Business, Flamingo Fancy and the Enchanted Forest. The route culminates at the Philly Zoo Pherris Wheel, the 110-foot observation wheel offering views across the decorated grounds and Philadelphia skyline.

Santa Claws and KidZooU add activities for families

One of the more substantial changes this season is the arrival of Santa Claws, whom visitors can meet at a festive lodge in the Garden Pavilion for informal photographs. The area will also feature holiday treats, selected musical performances and community-decorated trees in the Our Neck of the Woods display, where guests can vote for their favourite.

KidZooU will open each LumiNature evening between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., with animal ambassador encounters, wildlife talks and enrichment activities scheduled every half hour. Additional experiences include s’mores, cookie decorating, personalised ornaments, seasonal refreshments, the SEPTA PZ Express train and evening shopping.

The Zoo also plans to connect the fictional animal wish lists to real support opportunities, directing visitors to information on helping fulfil enrichment needs and conservation goals. Zoo President and CEO Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman said the redesigned attraction aims to give families additional ways to enjoy a holiday tradition while thinking about the animals that inspire it.

When to visit and what tickets cost

LumiNature is scheduled to operate on most nights from 19 November 2026 through 9 January 2027, with evening hours from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Timed tickets cost US$27–US$33 for guests aged 12 and older and US$22–US$28 for children aged two to 11. Admission is free for children younger than two. Flexible anytime tickets are listed at US$34 for adults and US$29 for children; eligible zoo members receive discounts of 10%–20%. Ticket bundles including a Pherris Wheel ride will also be available.

An adults-only addition, the inaugural LumiNature Cocktail Walk, is scheduled for 5 December, with six tasting stations and admission restricted to guests aged 21 and over. The Zoo is also inviting local performance groups to apply for appearances during selected evenings by 13 November.

The event takes place at 3400 West Girard Avenue in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. Visitors should dress for outdoor winter conditions, wear comfortable walking shoes and consult the official LumiNature event page for operating dates and ticket options. Further information about the displays and activities appears in the Zoo’s 2026 event announcement.
