Geographic Expeditions Launches Its First Trip Throughout Spain
The new 10-day small-group journey, Flavors of Northern Spain, travels across Spain's Atlantic north, offering insider access to a members-only Basque cooking society, prehistoric cave art, artisan producers and more.
Geographic Expeditions (GeoEx), a leader in curated, off-the-beaten path travel, is excited to announce the launch of its first trip throughout Spain with Flavors of Northern Spain. The new itinerary marks GeoEx's first journey in Spain and expands the company's collection of immersive adventures in Europe. This 10-day small-group itinerary explores the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias and is designed for no more than 14 travelers. The journey goes beyond Spain's familiar culinary highlights to reveal the people, traditions and landscapes that have shaped the country's Atlantic north for generations.
"We're thrilled to be adding the first Spain trip to GeoEx's portfolio," said Brady Binstadt, CEO of GeoEx. "For this trip, we wanted to create the kind of experience that reveals an unexpected side of Spain. We're especially excited to focus on the northern coast. From San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela, our travelers will taste their way through four distinct regions, meet local artisans who share their timeless crafts, and experience some of the country's most beautiful and varied landscapes."
At the heart of Flavors of Northern Spain is the kind of intimate access that defines a GeoEx journey. Travelers will step inside places typically inaccessible to visitors and spend time with the chefs, cheesemakers, cider makers, fishermen, and artisans carrying forward Northern Spain's distinctive cultural and culinary traditions.
Highlight experiences include:
Rare Access to a San Sebastián Sociedad Gastronómica
The journey begins in San Sebastián, one of Spain's most celebrated culinary destinations, with access rarely available to travelers: a private visit to a members-only Basque cooking society. Normally closed to outsiders, these traditional societies are an important part of San Sebastián's culinary culture. Guests spend the morning cooking alongside an accomplished local chef who prepares meals for some of the city's most discerning diners. Afterwards, the group gathers around the society's wonderfully modest dining room to enjoy the meal they have prepared, accompanied by local wines, offering a glimpse into a deeply rooted Basque tradition that exists well beyond the city's renowned restaurants.
Private Entry to View Prehistoric Cave Art
In Cantabria, the itinerary turns to an even older chapter of Northern Spain's cultural history with private access to Cueva de El Castillo and Cueva de Las Monedas, caves containing original Upper Paleolithic art. With access tightly regulated to help preserve the fragile sites, the experience offers travelers the rare opportunity to encounter prehistoric art in its original setting while gaining a deeper understanding of the region's earliest inhabitants and the ongoing work to protect these irreplaceable cultural treasures.
The Local Story Behind Asturian Cider
In Asturias, guests explore the tradition behind one of the region's most recognizable products, cider. At a multigenerational, family-run sidrería whose ciders have earned international recognition, travelers follow the journey of an apple from arrival through production and bottling before sitting down to taste the finished product. The experience provides an intimate look at the craftsmanship and family traditions behind Asturias' distinctive cider culture.
Meet The Rural Woman of the Year and Her Artisan Anchovy Business
The itinerary also brings travelers into the communities that define Asturias' rugged northern coast. In the fishing village of Lastres, guests meet Ana, an artisan anchovy producer whose business grew from a deep connection to the region's fishing heritage. Following the visit to Ana, who was named Asturias' Rural Woman of the Year, the group heads to nearby Tazones for a seafood lunch, connecting the region's fishing traditions directly to the food on the table.
A Day in the Picos de Europa
The journey culminates with a full day exploring the Picos de Europa, one of Northern Spain's most dramatic landscapes. Guests visit the Covadonga Lakes and enjoy private access to the Sanctuary of Covadonga before continuing to Cangas de Onís and the mountain village of Sotres for a traditional Asturian lunch. The day continues with visits to two artisan cheesemakers, offering a firsthand look at the contrasting techniques and traditions behind Asturias' mountain cheeses.
Together, these thoughtful and unique experiences curated by GeoEx's expert guides reveal a side of Northern Spain that travelers can't experience on their own.
The inaugural Flavors of Northern Spain journeys will take place from September 28-October 7 and October 12-21, 2027, with additional spring and fall departures planned for 2028. Rates begin at $16,900 per person based on double occupancy. For more information or to book, visit geoex.com.
