Azerbaijan and Albania eye stronger tourism links and joint initiatives for 2027

Tourism officials revisit a 2025 cooperation agreement, with connectivity, year-round travel and destination promotion on the agenda.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Tourism representatives from Azerbaijan and Albania met on 14 October to discuss cooperation in 2027.
  • Improved transport links and increased travel in both directions were priorities in the discussions.
  • The talks build on a memorandum of understanding signed by the tourism bodies on 21 June 2025.
  • A follow-up visit is planned, but no new routes or project launch dates were announced.

Tourism officials from Azerbaijan and Albania are examining ways to make travel between their countries more accessible and to expand joint destination promotion in 2027, following discussions that put transport links and two-way visitor flows at the centre of their cooperation agenda.

At a meeting on 14 October, Florian Sengstschmid, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, held talks with Jola Hysaj, Director General of Albania’s National Tourism Agency, and Besart Kadia, Albania’s ambassador to Azerbaijan. According to an official tourism board update, the discussions covered potential joint initiatives for 2027, improved transport connectivity and steps to encourage visitor travel in both directions.

Closer cooperation between tourism businesses was also on the agenda. Officials discussed exchanging professional expertise, coordinating destination marketing and developing stronger working relationships between representatives of the two countries’ travel industries. The announcement does not identify new flight services, confirmed transport agreements or specific tourism projects arising from the meeting.

Building on a 2025 tourism agreement

The discussions follow a memorandum of understanding signed by the two national tourism organisations on 21 June 2025. That agreement established a framework for collaboration on knowledge-sharing and international promotion, rather than a newly announced programme of visitor services.

The cooperation agenda includes sustainable tourism and travel opportunities beyond traditional seasonal peaks. For travellers, the countries offer contrasting destination experiences: Azerbaijan’s natural landscapes and cultural heritage, and Albania’s coastal and historic attractions. The tourism bodies are considering how to raise awareness of these offerings in each other’s markets while making tourism-industry contacts more effective.

Improved connections would be a practical consideration for any expansion in two-way tourism, although no timetable, routes or carriers were specified in the State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan announcement. A follow-up visit is planned to develop the subjects discussed and explore how the cooperation framework could translate into joint action. No date for that visit has been disclosed.
