- Nigeria: International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)-supported health facilities see 18 per cent rise in malnutrition casesIn north-east Nigeria, admissions for malnutrition have risen by nearly a fifth in a single year at six health centres and four hospitals supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). They went from around 17,000 cases between January and September 2025 to almost 20,000 cases over the same period this year. Young children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are the hardest hit. The increase is sharpest in Mubi, in Adamawa State, where admissions rose by nearly a quarter, from about 4,600 cases in the first nine months of 2025 to around 5,700 over the same period in 2026. At the Mubi Stabilization Centre mothers wait in line with their young children for a check of their nutritional status. Among them is Zulaihatu Mohammed, holding six-month-old Huseina, one of her twins. “When I gave birth to them, this one was tiny,” says Zulaihatu. “I came today for the routine collection of children’s food. She is not feeling well. Since I gave birth to her, she has been unwell.” Zulaihatu’s experience reflects the challenges facing families across north-eastern Nigeria, where armed conflict, climate shocks and economic pressures have disrupted livelihoods and made it harder to put meals on the table. For farmers like Saminu Samiyu Ijaduwa, explosive devices have made fields further from home dangerous to cultivate. For that reason, he has no choice but to cultivate a small plot, close to his house. “Due to the conflict, going one kilometre out of town to farm could be highly risky. You might not return!” says Saminu. When families cannot safely reach their fields and markets are disrupted, access to food becomes even more difficult. The consequences can be particularly serious for young children and pregnant and breastfeeding women. To combat malnutrition in Nigeria, the ICRC, together with the Nigerian Red Cross, supports 15 primary health-care centres and four hospitals, helps more than 200 communities to treat malnutrition and runs programmes to strengthen their food security. This includes providing farmers with seeds suited to drought and flooding, promoting crop diversity and supporting mothers to prepare nutritious food at home. For example, a blend of sorghum, millet, soybeans, groundnuts and moringa, known as ‘Tom Brown', has helped more than 13,000 young children recover from moderate acute malnutrition. Mothers also learn to prepare it themselves, in order to continue to provide nutritious food for their children. In Nigeria, Africa’s third-largest economy, the toll of 15 years of conflict has had a measurable impact on overall hunger levels: in 2026, more than 34 million people are expected to lack enough food to feed their families, the highest figure in six years, according to analysis from the United Nations [1]. This same report places Nigeria among the world’s hunger hotspots of highest concern, alongside Sudan, Yemen, Somalia and Gaza. - Zambia: Nyimba Farmers Benefit From Food Security Pack RecoveriesFarmers in Vizimumba Community Welfare Assistance Committee (CWAC) in Nyimba District are benefiting from a tractor procured through recoveries under the Food Security Pack (FSP) Programme. The tractor, procured at a cost of K552,500, was handed over to the community by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services in September 2024 and has been instrumental in improving access to agricultural services and supporting local farming activities. The community began using the equipment during the last farming season, with 80 CWAC members directly benefiting from the initiative. Vizimumba CWAC Chairperson, Mr. Joseph Tembo, said the tractor was being put to good use by providing farmers with access to mechanised land preparation services at an affordable cost. Mr. Tembo explained that farmers seeking ploughing services are charged K960 per hectare, adding that the initiative was helping community members access essential farming services. Speaking during a monitoring visit to assess the utilisation of the equipment, Director of Community Development, Mr. Changano Ngoi, who represented the Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Ms. Beatrice Chilomo, commended the CWAC members for prudently managing and repaying recoveries under the Food Security Pack Programme. Mr. Ngoi expressed satisfaction with the utilisation of the equipment, noting that its effective use demonstrated the value of reinvesting programme recoveries in community development initiatives. He emphasised the importance of responsibly managing programme resources, stating that the equipment was helping support community initiatives and improve the livelihoods of beneficiaries. The Food Security Pack Programme supports vulnerable but viable farming households with agricultural inputs to strengthen household food security and livelihoods. Recoveries under the programme help sustain these interventions by enabling resources to be reinvested in initiatives that benefit communities. - South Africa (SA) Food Exporters Target New Market Opportunities in FranceTwenty-seven South African food manufacturing companies will be seeking new export opportunities and commercial partnerships in France when they participate in the SIAL Paris International Food Products Exhibition from 17-21 October 2026. The companies will participate with the support of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), which will host a South African National Pavilion at the exhibition. The companies, drawn from six provinces, will showcase a diverse range of locally manufactured products including processed foods, non-alcoholic beverages, preserved foods, spices, soups, frozen products, cured meats, health and organic products, confectionery, seafood and gourmet food products. SIAL Paris brings together producers, distributors, restaurateurs, importers, exporters and other international food industry players. South Africa’s participation will provide local companies with an opportunity to showcase their products, engage prospective international buyers and explore new commercial opportunities. According to the Acting Deputy Director-General of Exports at the dtic, Mr Willem van der Spuy, South Africa’s participation forms part of the department’s broader efforts to increase exports of value-added products, diversify international markets and support South African companies to establish sustainable export relationships. “France is an important market in South Africa’s export diversification agenda and a strategic economic partner. Our objective is not simply to showcase South African products, but to use platforms such as SIAL Paris to connect export-ready companies with buyers, importers, distributors and other commercial partners who can assist them to establish and expand their presence in the French and broader European markets,” says Van der Spuy. He adds that the dtic is placing increased emphasis on targeted business-to-business matchmaking as part of its international export promotion interventions, with the aim of ensuring that participating companies engage with relevant buyers and commercial partners and that opportunities generated through these engagements are followed through after the exhibition. “We want to strengthen the commercial outcomes from our international engagements. This means increasing targeted B2B matchmaking, generating quality business leads and supporting companies to convert those opportunities into export orders, distribution partnerships and sustainable market relationships,” says Van der Spuy. He says the department’s support for companies participating in international exhibitions should ultimately contribute to expanding South Africa’s exporter base, growing exports of value-added manufactured products and enabling companies to increase production as they secure new international customers. “The real measure of success is what happens beyond the exhibition. When a South African company secures a new buyer, enters a new market or expands an existing export relationship, this creates the basis for increased production, business growth and employment. This is the commercial impact that we want our export promotion programme to increasingly deliver,” adds Van der Spuy. South Africa’s participation at SIAL Paris therefore forms part of a broader effort by the dtic to deepen commercial relations in priority international markets by combining international market exposure with targeted buyer engagement and sustained follow-up aimed at converting export opportunities into tangible commercial outcomes.
