For UK holidaymakers planning a winter escape to southern Thailand, a new non-stop option now links London Heathrow directly with Phuket. Virgin Atlantic’s inaugural flight landed at Phuket International Airport on 19 October 2026, opening a three-times-weekly seasonal connection that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hopes will support higher-value travel to the island and surrounding provinces.
The first service, flight VS214, departed Heathrow on 18 October with all 258 seats occupied, according to TAT’s account of the launch. Airline, airport and tourism representatives greeted passengers on arrival in Phuket, while an “Amazing Phuket Send Off” event in London marked the departure with Thai cultural performances and destination-themed displays.
Three weekly flights throughout the winter season
The route is scheduled to operate until 26 March 2027. Outbound flights leave London Heathrow on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 15:45, arriving in Phuket at 09:55 the following day. Phuket departures operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11:45, landing back at Heathrow at 19:25. The three weekly flights offer 774 inbound seats based on the 258-seat capacity cited for the inaugural aircraft.
The Heathrow service adds another long-haul entry point for visitors travelling to the Andaman coast without a connection in Bangkok. Travellers considering Phuket alongside Krabi or other southern destinations will have a further direct-arrival option during the peak northern-hemisphere winter travel period.
Tourism promotion targets UK bookings and travel sellers
TAT says its London office and Virgin Atlantic developed a joint campaign for travel in late 2026 and early 2027, spanning digital advertising, email marketing and promotions in Virgin Atlantic Holidays outlets. The tourism authority attributes 9,079 route bookings and at least 5.41 million audience exposures to the activity. Those figures are campaign results reported by TAT, rather than independently audited measures of additional visitors.
A group of 29 representatives from Barrhead Travel, led by managing director Nicki Tempest-Mitchell, joined the inaugural journey as part of TAT’s Top Sellers familiarisation trip. The programme is designed to give UK travel advisers first-hand experience of Thai destinations and products they may subsequently recommend to clients.
Chiravadee Khunsub, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing covering Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa, linked the service to the agency’s “Airline Focus” and “Value over Volume” approach. Its stated objective is not simply to increase arrivals, but to encourage longer stays and more tourism spending across Phuket and neighbouring destinations.
Why the British market matters to Thailand
TAT reports that UK visitor arrivals exceeded one million in 2025 for the first time, generating 74,515 million baht in tourism revenue, a 21.7% annual increase. Between 1 January and 3 September 2026, Thailand recorded 682,684 visitors from the UK. According to the authority’s figures, British travellers spend an average of 61,615 baht per trip and stay for 14.18 days.
Its visitor profile places first-time UK travellers at 56.99% and repeat travellers at 43.01%, with Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket, Surat Thani and Chiang Mai among the leading destinations. TAT sees opportunities for the new route to help distribute visitor expenditure beyond Phuket through excursions and multi-destination itineraries.
The route enters a market already served by direct UK–Thailand links. According to TAT, Thai Airways International and EVA Air together provide 21 weekly flights between Heathrow and Bangkok, while British Airways, TUI and Norse Atlantic Airways also offer seasonal Thailand services from London Gatwick and Manchester. Virgin Atlantic’s Phuket launch expands the choices available to UK travellers seeking a direct winter flight to Thailand’s southern coast.
