Vienna Airport wins Europe’s ground-handling award for a third time at Payload Asia Awards 2026

The Austrian hub collected the Singapore-presented distinction after previous wins in 2022 and 2025, highlighting its passenger, ramp and cargo services.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Vienna Airport received the 2026 Ground Handler of the Year – Europe award at the Payload Asia Awards in Singapore on October 19.
  • The airport previously won the same distinction in 2022 and 2025.
  • Its handling portfolio covers aircraft, passengers, baggage, general freight and sensitive pharmaceutical cargo.
  • The airport cites 24-hour operations, ten Category F stands and a GDP-certified pharmaceutical handling centre.

VIENNA, Austria — The work carried out between an aircraft’s arrival and its next departure has earned Vienna Airport another industry distinction. Austria’s largest airport has been named Ground Handler of the Year – Europe at the 2026 Payload Asia Awards, its third victory in the category following awards in 2022 and 2025.

The honour was presented on October 19 at the 13th edition of the awards in Singapore, with the result announced by Vienna Airport on October 20. Organised by the air cargo publication Payload Asia, the awards recognise companies working across aviation logistics, cargo, airports and handling services.

Although passengers often encounter ground handling only through check-in, baggage collection or time spent waiting at the gate, these services are essential to an airport’s daily performance. Ground crews coordinate aircraft movements and turnaround activities, while specialist teams manage baggage, freight and shipments requiring controlled conditions.

Operational performance behind the recognition

Julian Jäger, Vienna Airport’s joint chief executive officer and chief operating officer, credited the recognition to the skill and commitment of the airport’s handling workforce. In the airport’s official announcement, he pointed to efficient processes, reliability and performance standards as important in a competitive market.

Michael Zach, senior vice president of Ground Handling & Cargo Operations, described the range of work covered by the airport’s teams, from servicing aircraft and transferring baggage to moving substantial cargo volumes and handling temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products. He said infrastructure, operating procedures and experienced staff all contribute to turnaround performance.

Vienna Airport provides a broad range of ground, passenger and cargo handling services alongside airport security operations. It also serves as a freight gateway for Central and Eastern Europe, connecting international air cargo services with a regional network of feeder transport.

Among the facilities highlighted by the airport are ten aircraft stands capable of accommodating Category F aircraft, round-the-clock operational readiness and the Vienna Pharma Handling Center, a GDP-certified facility for pharmaceutical freight. Such capabilities matter not just to airlines and logistics firms but also to passengers, for whom baggage reliability and aircraft turnaround times can shape the travel experience.

Third win in five award years

The 2026 result follows Vienna Airport’s wins in 2022 and 2025. The repeated recognition gives the airport another industry credential in its efforts to serve airlines, freight forwarders and travellers, though the award itself is not a measure of all aspects of passenger satisfaction or airport punctuality.

The airport said the latest accolade reinforces its emphasis on maintaining handling standards and improving processes as air transport and cargo operations evolve. The Payload Asia Awards have recognised performance and innovation throughout the air logistics sector since 2012.
