WASHINGTON, DC — October 17, 2026 — Israfil Demir, a New Jersey-based Turkish American entrepreneur and community leader, released a set of recommendations on October 17 for strengthening economic, diplomatic, defense and community ties between the United States and Türkiye, according to a statement distributed by his office.

The recommendations follow renewed discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on defense restrictions, commercial agreements and regional security, the statement said.

On economic cooperation, Israfil Demir identified bilateral trade as a primary area for growth. The United States and Türkiye have previously set a goal of reaching $100 billion in annual bilateral trade. The statement cited Turkish Airlines' September 2026 Boeing aircraft agreement and long-term liquefied natural gas supply arrangements as recent commercial developments.

Demir recommended more structured engagement between American and Turkish businesses, including sector-specific cooperation in energy, aviation, technology, advanced manufacturing and defense-related industries. He also called for stronger business networks and more efficient visa processes for entrepreneurs seeking commercial opportunities in both countries.

On defense, the statement noted that Türkiye's acquisition of the Russian S-400 defense system led to its removal from the F-35 program in 2019 and subsequent U.S. sanctions under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). It said Turkish officials reiterated in October 2026 their interest in removing defense restrictions and continuing negotiations regarding the F-35 program.

Demir expressed support for diplomatic efforts to address security concerns while preserving cooperation between the two NATO allies. He also identified potential opportunities for collaboration in defense manufacturing, technological development and regional security.

On diplomacy, Israfil Demir recommended continued communication among government institutions, elected officials, business organizations and civil society representatives. He said regular dialogue on regional developments involving the Black Sea, Syria, Ukraine and the broader Middle East could help both countries manage disagreements and identify shared interests. Engagement with the U.S. Congress and public institutions was another component he cited.

Israfil Demir also emphasized the role of Turkish American organizations in building connections between the two countries. Drawing on his previous participation in Turkish American civic organizations and community initiatives, he highlighted charitable service, entrepreneurship, cultural programs and engagement with elected representatives. The statement noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Turkish American community initiatives supported healthcare institutions and families in New York and New Jersey through protective equipment and food assistance.

His recommendations included expanded educational exchanges, professional networking, sister-city relationships and opportunities for Turkish American entrepreneurs to connect with institutions in both countries.

Demir said the proposals reflect his view that a productive U.S.-Türkiye relationship requires consistent communication among government institutions, businesses and civic organizations.

Israfil Demir is a New Jersey-based Turkish American entrepreneur and community leader whose background includes business development, civic engagement and participation in Turkish American organizations.
