Tom Sowden's New Memoir, So, the Boy Got Stronger, Chronicles a Life That Refused to Be Defined by the Odds

From a childhood heart disease diagnosis and a prognosis that could have defined his future to a life of military service, adventure, faith, entrepreneurship, and 40 years of love, Tom Sowden's newest memoir tells the story of a life that refused to be limited by what others expected.

At five years old, Tom Sowden was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart disease and told he likely would not live past his 20th birthday. Instead, he built a life that stretched far beyond that prediction.

His newly released memoir, So, the Boy Got Stronger, tells the story of a small-town Kansas boy who went on to serve in the U.S. Navy, travel internationally, lead businesses, build a family, and share 40 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Becky. It is a deeply personal story of perseverance, faith, adventure, love, and the strength to keep going.

After spending nearly a year lying flat because of his illness, Sowden eventually learned to walk again. That early experience marked the beginning of a life defined by determination and an unwillingness to accept limitations as the final word.

He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy, including a Vietnam deployment, before returning to Kansas at his father's request to help with the family-owned New Era Milling Company. He planned to stay for one year; he remained for 20. His career later expanded into corporate leadership and entrepreneurship, including work with Archer Daniels Midland and ownership of Kansas City Bag Company. Even earlier, a childhood paper route had taught him some of his first lessons about responsibility, customers, and the realities of business, lessons that would eventually shape his writing.

Those experiences became the foundation for Sowden's first book, Entrepreneur Me - You Too: Your Dream Business Doesn't Need to Fail. The idea was sparked by an encounter near Camp Pendleton, where Sowden met four recently discharged Marines who wanted to start businesses but feared failure. Having faced the dangers of military service, they were still hesitant to take a chance on themselves. Their concerns led Sowden to wonder how many others were allowing fear of failure to keep them from pursuing their ideas. Drawing on decades of experience, Sowden wrote the book to help others move past that hesitation and give their ideas a chance.

As technology continued to change the way people work and build businesses, Sowden carried those ideas into his second book, AI & Entrepreneur Me - You Too: Your Dream Business Doesn't Need to Fail, exploring the opportunities created by artificial intelligence while encouraging entrepreneurs to adapt and remain open to change.

While his first two books explored what Sowden learned through entrepreneurship and technology, So, the Boy Got Stronger turns the focus inward, telling the life behind those lessons. It brings together the experiences that made him who he is, from childhood illness and military service to business, faith, family, and 40 years with Becky. At its heart, it is a story reminding us that a difficult beginning does not have to determine the ending.

Together, Sowden's three books tell different parts of the same story, from building a business, to navigating a changing world, to sharing the wisdom gained along the way.

After decades of living, serving, working, leading, loving, and learning, Sowden has chosen to share that journey with readers, not simply as a story of survival, but as a testament to faith, determination, purpose, and love that carried him through it.

His newest memoir is more than the story of a childhood illness. It is the story of a life. A life that kept moving forward. And a boy who, against the odds, really did get stronger.

So, the Boy Got Stronger by Tom Sowden is available through major book retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and wherever books are sold. For readers who believe there can be more to a life than its circumstances suggest, Sowden's story offers a powerful reminder of just how far perseverance, faith, and love can carry us.
