The SustainabilityX® Magazine is proud to announce the digital release of the 5th Annual Global 50 Women In Sustainability Awards™ 2026, a special anniversary edition marking 10 years of SustainabilityX® and recognizing 100 women advancing sustainability leadership around the world.
This year's awards are unveiled under the theme "Leading in an Age of Resistance: Moving Forward in a World Moving Backwards." The theme is inspired by the book "Bold Women, Sustainable Futures: Leadership Lessons in an Age of Resistance" (2026) by Supriya Verma and reflects a defining moment for sustainability and women's leadership: a time when climate action, equity, governance, inclusion, and long-term systems change are facing increasing resistance, yet women across sectors continue to lead with courage, clarity, resilience, and purpose.
The official digital launch took place on October 20, 2026 at 9:00 AM EST through The SustainabilityX® Magazine's online awards platform. This year's unveiling coincided with Munich Climate Week, with support from an expanded group of promotional partners committed to amplifying women's leadership in sustainability.
Celebrating Women Leading Forward
The Global 50 Women In Sustainability Awards™ were created to recognize women whose work is shaping a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future. Now in its fifth year, the awards have become a global platform for celebrating women advancing sustainability across sectors, disciplines, regions, and forms of leadership.
For 2026, in honour of The SustainabilityX® Magazine's 10th anniversary, the awards expanded beyond the traditional 50 awardees to recognize 100 women whose leadership reflects the complexity, urgency, and possibility of this moment.
"This year is deeply personal and deeply symbolic," said Supriya Verma, WELL AP, Founder of The SustainabilityX® Magazine and author of Bold Women, Sustainable Futures: Leadership Lessons in an Age of Resistance (2026). "As SustainabilityX® marks 10 years, we are not only celebrating a milestone for the magazine — we are celebrating the women who continue to lead forward when the world feels uncertain, divided, and resistant to progress. These awards are a reminder that women's leadership is not secondary to sustainability. It is central to how we build a more just, resilient, and sustainable future."
The 2026 Theme: Leading in an Age of Resistance
The 2026 theme, "Leading in an Age of Resistance: Moving Forward in a World Moving Backwards," speaks to the global context in which many women are leading today. Across the world, sustainability leaders are navigating climate disruption, geopolitical instability, social polarization, economic uncertainty, attacks on equity and inclusion, and growing pushback against ESG, climate action, and women's rights.
Yet the 2026 awardees demonstrate that leadership in sustainability has never been only about technical solutions. It is also about courage, representation, governance, imagination, community, and the ability to keep building even when progress is challenged.
This year's theme also builds on the ideas explored in Supriya Verma's debut book, Bold Women, Sustainable Futures: Leadership Lessons in an Age of Resistance (2026), which highlights the non-linear journeys, resilience, leadership lessons, and lived experiences of women shaping sustainability across sectors.
"The women recognized this year are not waiting for perfect conditions to lead," Verma added. "They are leading through resistance, across complexity, and often through non-linear paths. Their work shows that sustainability leadership is not confined to one title, one industry, or one institution. It is found wherever women are building systems, communities, organizations, policies, ideas, and futures that move us forward."

About Bold Women, Sustainable Futures
What do we do now? How do we move forward in a world moving backward?
"Bold Women, Sustainable Futures: Leadership Lessons in an Age of Resistance" is a moving and timely debut book by Supriya Verma, launched in March 2026 for Women's Month.
Around the world, women bear the brunt of the climate crisis—yet remain the least likely to hold positions of power or decision-making in shaping its solutions.
As women face the compounding pressures of the climate emergency, global rollbacks on DEI and ESG policies, and the revival of cultural misogyny, Bold Women, Sustainable Futures: Leadership Lessons in an Age of Resistance offers a powerful and timely exploration of the progress, potential, and power of women in sustainability leadership to drive inclusive and systemic change.
Amid the growing backlash against climate action, gender equity, human rights, and DEI, women in leadership positions find themselves facing new and unprecedented challenges—from burnout and backlash to exclusion—while still struggling to navigate systems never designed for them in the first place.
Years of research show that sustainability and sustainable development are best supported by leadership rooted in collective progress, justice, and inclusion—values women often bring to the table. But how do we continue to support and encourage women to lead in the face of such persistent and mounting opposition?
Bold Women, Sustainable Futures addresses this dilemma, serving as both a guide and a call to action—for women stepping into leadership roles, as a tribute to those who have come before, and as an invitation to the next generation of sustainability leaders.
It begins by profiling nine women leading across climate science, governance, business, media, advocacy, and the arts—including Helle Bank Jorgensen, Roberta Boscolo, Honourable Rosa Galvez, Tensie Whelan, Dr. Shawna Pandya, Sylvia Yu Friedman, Dr. Dianne Saxe, Dr. Deborah Rosati, and the author herself—weaving in her own deeply personal reflections on leadership, identity, and transformation as a woman of colour navigating voice and visibility throughout her journey so far.
The second half takes a hard look at the global backlash against DEI and ESG, revealing the historical cycles of gendered progress and regression while offering strategies, solutions, and concrete steps for meeting this moment head-on.
A powerful, fiery fulcrum chapter, "The Turning Point," brings together diverse reflections from extraordinary women around the world across sustainability, business, and justice movements, offering wisdom and guidance on leading with courage when the systems we thought were shifting begin to turn back. The book ends with practical tips and strategies for navigating the current backlash, aimed at existing female leaders, emerging and aspiring leaders, students, and allies.
Beautifully written, evidence-based, and told through women's real-life experiences, Bold Women, Sustainable Futures serves as a mirror revealing how far we still have to go—exposing the systemic barriers women face in leadership—and counters them with actionable strategies, inspiring stories, and a message of hope.
This book is a playbook for navigating uncharted territory, rewriting the rules of power, and leading with courage toward a sustainable future—especially when the world pushes back.
The themes of the book closely inform the spirit of the 2026 Global 50 Women In Sustainability Awards™, especially this year's focus on women who continue to lead forward despite uncertainty, resistance, and systemic barriers.
