SFC Virginia Invites the Community to Adopt Pets in Need of Loving Homes During PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week

Adoption events will take place at PetSmart stores in Fredericksburg and Stafford October 21–25, with adoption fees reduced by 50% through support from the Petfinder Foundation.

Every pet deserves the chance to have a loving home. As shelters and rescues across Virginia continue to operate with strained resources and limited space, SFC Virginia is partnering with PetSmart Charities® to help more dogs and cats find families during PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week.

SFC Virginia will host four adoption events during the week at PetSmart locations in Fredericksburg and Stafford:

Wednesday, October 21, 4–7 PM PetSmart Central Park 1421 Carl D Silver Pkwy. Fredericksburg, VA Friday, October 23, 4–7 PM PetSmart Central Park 1421 Carl D Silver Pkwy. Fredericksburg, VA Saturday, October 24, 12–3 PM PetSmart Stafford Marketplace 1160 Stafford Marketplace Stafford, VA Sunday, October 25, 1–4 PM PetSmart Central Park 1421 Carl D Silver Pkwy. Fredericksburg, VA

Throughout these events, SFC Virginia will offer 50% reduced adoption fees with support from the Petfinder Foundation’s 2026 No-Fee/Low-Fee, All Love Grant. The grant helps offset the reduction in adoption fees while preserving funding SFC relies on for veterinary care, transport, foster support, and the daily care of animals in the rescue.

The goal is not only to help more animals find homes during National Adoption Week, but also to create additional foster capacity so SFC can continue helping overcrowded shelters throughout Virginia.

“Every adoption creates an opportunity for us to help another animal,” said Ryan Barker, Executive Director of SFC Virginia. “Our foster homes are often full, and many of our shelter partners are facing the same space challenges. When an animal moves from foster care into a permanent home, that space can immediately become an option for the next dog, cat, puppy, or kitten who needs us. We are grateful to PetSmart Charities and the Petfinder Foundation for helping us connect more animals with families while continuing to support the work that happens before they are ready for adoption.”

Fall can be an ideal time to welcome a new pet into the family, giving adopters time to establish routines, build relationships, and help a new companion settle in before the busy holiday season.

SFC Virginia expects to have an assortment of adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens available throughout the week. Animal lineups will vary by event based on foster availability and the needs of individual pets.

SFC staff and volunteers will be available to help potential adopters spend time with animals, answer questions, and learn more about which pets may be a good fit for their home and lifestyle. SFC’s adoption process is designed to help create strong matches, and submitting an application is non-binding.

Available pets can be viewed and adoption applications can be submitted at www.sfcva.org. Specific event lineups and updates will also be shared on SFC Virginia’s Facebook page at facebook.com/squishyfacecrewva.

“National Adoption Week is a wonderful time to adopt a pet and support your local shelter or rescue,” said Patrick Bell, director of Pet Placement Initiatives at PetSmart Charities. “When you adopt, you provide a loving home while helping free up space and resources for another pet in need. We’re proud to work alongside partners such as SFC Virginia to help make a lasting difference for pets, families and the entire community.”
