Award-winning comedian, storyteller, and writer Lilia Mahfouz is adding a new chapter to her artistic career with the inclusion of her selected nonfiction work, The Last Piece of Chocolate, in the collections of Stanford University Libraries.

After a decade-long career captivating French and American audiences through international comedy festivals, radio, and television, Lilia Mahfouz has brought her storytelling gift to the written page. The Last Piece of Chocolate draws on Lilia Mahfouz's childhood in Tunisia and her experience arriving in France as a young child, transforming personal memories into reflections on identity, resilience, and growing up between different worlds.

The addition of Lilia Mahfouz's work to Stanford University Libraries preserves her writing for future readers and researchers while placing her personal account within a broader collection of cultural and intellectual material.

When asked about the role of writing in bringing together the stark realities of her arrival in France and the tenderness associated with childhood memories, Lilia Mahfouz explained:

"Who talks about reconciliation? I first describe raw facts: the arrival in France of a little immigrant child into a black-and-white world of sidewalks, streets, and sky. The discomfort and ugliness of the new living space. The perception of a gentle and protected childhood is painted later, in adulthood. Yet, perceived reality is never an absolute truth. Writing builds a bridge between a real world and a vanished, perhaps fantasized one."

For Lilia Mahfouz, those memories ultimately reach beyond her own story. As she explains:

"Not as mere anecdotes in my own history, but as elements that reach deep into the universal when it comes to uprooting, attempts at integration, and above all, all the humiliations and shames that always accompany them, regardless of the country of departure and the country where one ends up."

The Last Piece of Chocolate is part of a larger essay collection currently in development, through which Lilia Mahfouz plans to explore her personal experiences in greater depth while continuing to connect them to broader human experiences.

Lilia Mahfouz also brings the sensibility of her comedy career to her writing, including her affinity for the comedy of the absurd. When discussing humor and hardship, Lilia Mahfouz jokingly suggested that she might first need to reread Henri Bergson's classic philosophy of laughter twice before answering.

Her response to having her work archived at Stanford was characteristically playful:

"I told myself I have a toe in eternity!"

Describing her artistic path as "utterly chaotic," Lilia Mahfouz remains committed to one enduring conclusion: everything ultimately improves with a last piece of chocolate.
