Inés Franklin knows that blending a family can begin with hope, yet still uncover issues no one saw coming.

More than 20 years ago, Franklin and her husband, Jim, brought two family histories into one home. Together, they began building what their children would eventually call the “Franklin Smoothie,” a blended family that now includes five children and twelve grandchildren.

The name is playful. The process of becoming a family was not always easy.

Like many remarried couples, the Franklins discovered that a wedding could establish a new household in a day, but trust, belonging, and unity would take much longer to build. Each family member arrived with personal history, established relationships, expectations, and wounds. New love did not automatically erase old grief.

That journey became the foundation for Franklin’s book, Blended & Blessed: Building Family Unity & Healing Through the Beatitudes.

“I did not write this book because our family followed a perfect formula,” Franklin said. “I wrote it because God met us in the complicated places. He taught us that healing is often slow, that forgiveness is a repeated choice, and that unity is built through grace-filled faithfulness over time.”

THE HIDDEN PAIN MANY BLENDED FAMILIES CARRY

A blended family often begins after divorce, death, abandonment, or another significant loss. Even when a remarriage is joyful, family members may still be grieving what came before.

Children may wonder whether accepting a step-parent betrays their biological parent. Step-parents may offer love without knowing whether it will be returned. Biological parents may feel torn between supporting a new spouse and protecting their children. Couples may struggle to establish shared authority while navigating former spouses, custody schedules, and competing household expectations.

Many Christian parents also carry shame. They may fear that their family story is too broken, too complicated, or too far from what they believe a Christian home should look like.

Franklin wants those families to know that Jesus does not wait for them to repair their lives before drawing near.

“The gospel is not reserved for families with uncomplicated stories,” Franklin said. “Jesus meets us in the grief, confusion, conflict, and disappointment. He does not shame us for bringing Him broken pieces. Redemption is what He does.”

WHY HEALING CANNOT BE RUSHED

Franklin says one of the most damaging expectations placed on blended families is the belief that everyone should quickly feel close.

Parents may be eager to create new traditions and move forward. Children may still be mourning a previous family structure. A step-parent may be ready to assume a parental role before a child is ready to trust them.

When those timelines collide, disappointment can turn into pressure, conflict or withdrawal.

Blended & Blessed encourages parents and step-parents to replace forced closeness with patient, consistent love. It also helps families make room for grief rather than treating difficult emotions as resistance to the new marriage.

“Healing in a blended family is rarely one dramatic breakthrough,” Franklin said. “It is often a child slowly beginning to feel safe. It is a step-parent choosing patience when love is not returned. It is a couple having the hard conversation before resentment becomes a crisis. It is a family staying at the table and trusting God with what is still unfinished.”

A BIBLICAL FRAMEWORK FOR BLENDED FAMILY UNITY

Blended & Blessed uses the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12) to guide families through the inner work required for lasting unity.

The book connects biblical principles with the daily realities of:

• Step-parenting and earning trust

• Co-parenting with wisdom and healthy boundaries

• Processing grief after divorce or loss

• Releasing bitterness and practicing forgiveness

• Protecting and strengthening the new marriage

• Helping children navigate loyalty conflicts

• Creating Christ-centered family rhythms

• Building belonging without demanding instant closeness

Franklin encourages families to establish shared spiritual rhythms, including prayer, Scripture, worship, church involvement, and service. These practices cannot manufacture instant unity, but they can steadily orient the household toward Christ.

“Your children and stepchildren are watching how you live when conflict is real and patience is thin,” Franklin said. “Keeping Christ at the center of a blended family is not about appearing spiritual. It is about allowing your own relationship with God to shape how you listen, apologize, forgive, and love.”

PRACTICAL HELP FOR CHRISTIAN PARENTS AND STEP-PARENTS

Franklin wrote Blended & Blessed for real families living through real challenges.

The book does not present a sentimental picture of blended family life. It offers honest personal stories, biblical insight, research-informed guidance, and practical tools for families who want to move toward greater health and unity.

Readers are encouraged to:

• Give children permission to express grief and difficult emotions

• Let trust develop at a healthy pace

• Seek help from trained Christian counselors when needed

• Address bitterness toward former spouses

• Prioritize the marriage as an anchor for the household

• Build consistent family and spiritual rhythms

• Create opportunities to serve and grow together

• Choose grace over the pressure to appear perfect

A free companion guide includes self-reflection exercises, healing discussions, prayer prompts, and Beatitudes reflections. The guide can be used by individuals, couples, counselors, small groups, and churches seeking a structured Christian resource for blended family ministry.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE FOR COMPLICATED FAMILIES

Franklin believes blended families can become some of the clearest demonstrations of God’s ability to redeem what has been wounded.

The goal is not to recreate the family that existed before or pretend the past never happened. The goal is to allow God to form something new.

“New family bonds are not lesser bonds,” Franklin said. “Through patience, humility, and the grace of God, they can become deep, enduring, and beautiful. Your family’s story may not look the way you once imagined, but that does not mean God is finished writing it.”

Blended & Blessed: Building Family Unity & Healing Through the Beatitudes is available now for blended families, step-parents, Christian couples, pastors, counselors, and ministry leaders.
