El Salvador to process traveler data prior to arrival by flight or cruise, first in Central America
Geneva – Tuesday, October 20, 2026
El Salvadors border authorities can now assess air and sea travelers before they enter or leave the country. This lets officers focus on the passengers who need more attention, strengthening security while making crossings smoother for everyone else. The General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners (DGME), part of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, has deployed SITAs traveler data gateway solution. El Salvador is the first country in Central America to use it, connecting airlines, cruise operators, and border authorities through a single platform for pre-arrival traveler information.
The system collects and processes advance traveler information submitted by carriers before departure, including traveler identity, travel document, itinerary and booking data. By bringing together these data sources, DGME gains a fuller and earlier view of who is traveling to the country and how they booked their journey.
That pre-arrival visibility allows border teams to identify and pre-approve travelers before they enter the country. It is a direct tool in preventing irregular migration, human trafficking and other transnational criminal activity.
The General Director of the Direccin General de Migracin y Extranjera, Licenciado Ricardo Ernesto Cucaln said: SITAs traveler data gateway takes our border management and security to the next level. By assessing traveler behavior and advance booking patterns we are now working with the quality and depth of data needed to assess and to act on threats to our air and sea borders in real time. It is enabling us to act preventively and in a coordinated manner, strengthening our preparedness and response to transnational crime.
Governments across Central America are accelerating digitalization to keep pace with rising security threats and growing travel volumes, said Pedro Alves, Senior Vice President of Borders at SITA. El Salvador is setting a strong example by creating a unified approach to traveler data across air and maritime transport. With a more complete view of travelers before arrival, border authorities can make faster decisions, strengthen security and support smoother journeys.
The system also strengthens El Salvadors operational and data-governance frameworks by delivering traveler information to authorities at the right time and in the correct format to support inbound and outbound immigration processes. It is now being used to oversee travel through the countrys primary Monseor scar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL), and will extend to ports authorized for cruise ship calls, supporting both air and maritime traveler operations.
Beyond the immediate security benefits, SITAs solution helps DGME establish the analytical processes needed to turn traveler data into faster and more informed decision-making.
By combining API, PNR and maritime data, the system helps to identify irregularities and detect suspicious travel patterns across air and maritime journeys to and from El Salvador. It also supports compliance with international requirements set by the United Nations Security Council and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
