Laguna Hills / USA. BMW Group, IONNA and Alpitronic join forces to demonstrate High-Power Charging as a part of an International Media Event.
The first ever battery-electric BMW X5 – raising the bar.
The new BMW iX5 is being launched with the sixth generation of
BMW’s eDrive technology. This includes a new powertrain with a
completely new high-voltage battery concept and will now be
implemented in the new BMW iX5, after having debuted in the BMW iX3.
Known as Gen6, this new development with 800V technology delivers significantly extended range, faster charging, and bidirectional charging functionality. Alongside updated and highly efficient electric motors, Gen6 includes completely new high-voltage batteries with cylindrical cells. These deliver 20% increased volumetric energy density than their predecessors, the Gen5 prismatic battery cells.
Faster Charging for the iX5 60 xDrive means: up to 460 kW peak DC Charging Power and adding a range of up to 217 miles in only 10 minutes (WLTP). Charging the 141 kWh battery pack (net) from 10 to 80 per cent takes just 22 minutes.
“Showing the full high-power charging potential of the new BMW iX5
for the first time in front of global media in Southern California,
makes us very proud. We want to thank our partners at IONNA and
Alpitronic who help to make this demonstration possible with
outstanding expertise in their fields of technology.
Charging with
up to 460 kW, and many new intelligent Charging functions, are key
aspects of the technological leap we are taking with our Gen6 eDrive
technology, fully focused on our global customers.” says Dr. Thomas
Engelhardt SVP High-Voltage Battery and Charging at BMW Group.
IONNA: Turning high-power charging into a reliable customer experience
IONNA’s EV Charging network is the connective tissue, tying together vehicle innovation with reliable hardware to preserve the customer-experience. For drivers, the public charging experience extends beyond plugging in and IONNA is building a customer-focused network that caters to the customers’ top priorities:
Reliability, with rigorous interoperability testing and operations designed to keep charging simple and dependable; affordability, including charging discounts available to eligible BMW drivers; and convenience, through seamless digital integrations and locations designed around the needs of our drivers and their journeys.
“This collaboration is translating next-generation charging technology into an experience drivers can trust,” said Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA. “By bringing together BMW’s vehicle innovation, Alpitronic’s high-power charging hardware expertise and IONNA’s customer-first network, we are helping redefine what public charging should be, while building a foundation for what comes next.”
Alpitronic: Advancing charging technology alongside vehicle innovation
Alpitronic brings its high-power charging expertise to the
demonstration, delivering up to 460 kW to the new BMW iX5 through
close collaboration with BMW Group and IONNA. Building on its
long-term partnership with BMW, Alpitronic is advancing charging
capabilities alongside vehicle technology to meet the requirements of
next-generation electric vehicles.
The shared focus is seamless
interaction between the vehicle and charging hardware that supports a
fast, simple charging experience for drivers.
The 460kW experience is a technology demonstration and does not represent charging hardware commercially available in the U.S. today.
“Vehicle innovation and charging infrastructure must advance together. Our long-term partnership with BMW gives us a deep understanding of how to bring those technologies together, and this demonstration with IONNA shows what that collaboration can deliver,” said Philipp Senoner, CEO and co-founder of Alpitronic.

CO2 emission information.
Fuel consumption, CO2 emission figures and power consumption and range were measured using the methods required according to Regulation VO (EC) 2007/715 as amended. They refer to vehicles on the German automotive market. For ranges, the NEDC figures take into account differences in the selected wheel and tyre size, while the WLTP figures take into account the effects of any optional equipment.
All figures have already been calculated based on the new WLTP test cycle. NEDC figures listed have been adjusted to the NEDC measurement method where applicable. WLTP values are used as a basis for the assessment of taxes and other vehicle-related duties which are (also) based on CO2 emissions and, where applicable, for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies. Further information are available at www.bmw.de/wltp and at www.dat.de/co2/.
