The Secret Underwater Garden runs from 22 December to 7 January with coral planting, cultural evenings, ocean excursions and beachfront celebrations.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The Secret Underwater Garden runs from 22 December 2026 through 7 January 2027 at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru in the Maldives.
  • Christmas Day coral planting and other Marine Lab activities put reef education and conservation at the centre of the programme.
  • The schedule combines Maldivian cultural experiences, Christmas and New Year dinners, cruises, watersports and wellbeing sessions.
  • A new Junior Ocean Guardian programme introduces younger guests to marine life through educational workshops.

A festive holiday in the Maldives will come with an opportunity to take part in reef conservation this winter, as Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru prepares a 17-day programme that pairs Christmas and New Year celebrations with marine science, island traditions and outdoor experiences. Its The Secret Underwater Garden season runs from 22 December 2026 to 7 January 2027, with activities designed for guests of different ages.

The programme centres on the marine environment surrounding the resort, rather than treating it solely as the setting for a beach holiday. On Christmas Day, guests will be able to join a Christmas Tree Coral Planting activity intended to support restoration of the island’s house reef. The resort also plans guided conservation activities under the Save the Reef initiative, citizen-science snorkelling, talks about marine ecosystems and coral micro-fragmentation sessions led by its marine team.

Marine conservation becomes part of the holiday calendar

Marine education is an established part of the property’s operations. According to the 19 October announcement published by Visit Maldives, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru established its resort-based Marine Lab in 2004. For families, the new Junior Ocean Guardian programme will offer educational workshops with the Marine Lab team, introducing younger visitors to marine life and environmental stewardship.

These activities give the festive schedule an additional dimension for travellers interested in how resorts engage with the ecosystems on which island tourism depends. Coral planting and related workshops are presented as participatory elements of the resort’s ongoing conservation efforts, rather than a guarantee of particular reef-restoration outcomes.

Maldivian culture and festive dining share the spotlight

The celebrations begin on 22 December with a Christmas-tree decoration workshop hosted by resident artist Abdulla, followed by a beachfront tree-lighting ceremony. Elsewhere in the schedule, guests can explore traditional sandbank shore fishing, learn Maldivian cooking techniques and experience Bodu Beru drumming. A Festive Maldivian Night on 1 January combines island dishes and cultural performances.

Dining events span Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, with a New Year Gala Dinner planned for Naiboli Beach. Throughout the season, guests can also choose Japanese cuisine at Madi Hiyaa, Thai specialities at Saffron, Maldivian-inspired meals, cooking classes and festive mixology sessions. The announcement does not specify package prices or which activities are included in a room booking, so travellers should confirm arrangements directly with the resort.

From the house reef to neighbouring islands

The recreation programme extends beyond guided reef experiences. Planned options include dolphin-watching cruises, Kahan’bhu sunset cruises, traditional fishing trips, private big-game fishing and day cruises. On and around the water, the resort lists seasonal diving, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing and ride-and-slide activities, alongside beach volleyball and football.

Another scheduled activity is an Island-to-Island Swim linking Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru with sister property Dhawa Ihuru. The event adds a more active way for participating guests to experience the surrounding waters.

For visitors who prefer a quieter pace, the resort is scheduling sunrise and sunset beach yoga, outdoor wellbeing sessions, self-care massage workshops and personalised wellness rituals. A Year-End Gratitude Meditation on 31 December offers a reflective close to 2026 before the evening festivities.

The programme ends on 7 January 2027 with an Orthodox Christmas Party. Full holiday arrangements and accommodation enquiries can be directed to the official Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru website; visitors may also consult Visit Maldives for destination information.
